Slovenian Railway Museum (orig. ‘Železniški muzej Slovenskih železnic’) was set up in the 1960s to keep a collection of preserved locomotives, rolling stock and other rail equipment used in Slovenia through history. The museum was originally located in a former roundhouse in Ljubljana.
The present-day museum building is made up of two facilities. The main facility comprises a semi-circular roundhouse with a turntable, which was used to store, service and turn steam locomotives. The roundhouse has a collection of steam locomotive exhibits and other historical rail vehicles. The adjacent facility – a former storage room attached to the roundhouse – hosts a permanent exhibition of equipment and material used in other areas of rail necessary to keep the railway going, such as the traffic control room, maintenance-of-way, network development, telecommunications and signalling equipment and a collection of rail attire (uniforms).
