In-house training programmes

SŽ Education and Training Centre (orig. 'Izobraževalni center', or IC) provides support to training processes in the Group in terms of expertise, content and structure.

We have a skilled team of rail professionals who run the Train Driver Training Centre and Train Driver Assessment Centre. We deliver training to SŽ employees doing safety-critical work and carry out functional training in production and back-office areas of work while also running an in-house academy for employees in managerial positions. IC serves as a one-stop shop for document processing and management in basic and advanced training and in competency assessments.

Because we want to help you grow and advance your career, we offer a lot of different training programmes which can be taken on a voluntary basis so you can gain new knowledge in various areas of work.

To support our company's development on the whole, we deliver regular training while creating a work environment which helps you improve your skills, try different jobs within the Group and further your career.

Our facilities

We are headquartered at Aljaževa 32 in Ljubljana, but we hold basic training courses also in Maribor, Zidani Most, Celje and Divača, with advanced provided across the country.

Our facilities use modern tech and are tailored to your needs and to the requirements of our training programmes. All teaching rooms have access to the internet and are equipped with interactive LCD displays and conference room cameras. We have a dedicated IT room with fifteen PCs and an interactive projector used in software training relevant to your area of work, such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft, Excel, SAP, BC, Roman and more.

About us

IC is a team of professionals with extensive experience in the rail industry. To make the most of each training course IC provides the necessary facilities, IT equipment and customised course materials. In addition, the team uses a customised approach to best address the training specifics of every individual.

To make sure you understand the things you're trying to learn, training courses include practical examples and field trips to train stations and other rail facilities.

The trainers are experts in their particular discipline with extensive experience, which is imbued in the knowledge they share through training programmes.

In addition to the in-house team, IC also collaborates with out-of-house trainers to deliver training courses.

Training programmes

Under Service Level Agreements with companies in the Group, IC delivers training programmes, competency assessments, advanced training (theory) and assessment of theoretical knowledge for a total of twenty different jobs in operations, namely: shunter, shunter [industry lines], head of shunting, head of shunting [industry lines], train manager (orig. 'vlakovodja'), assistant train driver, wagon technician (orig. 'preglednik vagonov'), points operator (orig. 'kretnik'), section traffic controller ('orig. 'odjavnik'), movements inspector (orig. 'prometnik'), route control manager (orig. 'progovni prometnik'), train dispatcher (orig. 'vlakovni dispečer'), track inspector (orig. 'progovni čuvaj'), ways and works maintenance worker (orig. ' vzdrževalec prog, objektov in opreme proge') signalling maintenance worker (orig.  'vzdrževalec signalnovarnostnih naprav'), telecommunications maintenance worker (orig. 'vzdrževalec telekomunikacijskih omrežij in opreme'), overhead line equipment (OLE) maintenance worker (orig. 'vzdrževalec stabilnih naprav električne vleke'), OLE operator (orig. 'dispečer stabilnih naprav električne vleke'), on-board conductor (orig. 'sprevodnik') and chief train guard ('orig. vodja vlaka').

In line with the relevant decision of the Public Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for Railway Transport (AŽP), the Train Driver Training Centre and Train Driver Assessment Centre are certified to deliver the following training programmes:

Functional training

Through functional skills training, we support your personal growth and help you advance your career. You will gain the basic skills needed to work in production or back-office and to do your job efficiently while keeping abreast with the newest developments in various disciplines. Some of our functional training courses are delivered to SŽ Group by our in-house team, but a large chunk of the training is provided in collaboration with our out-of-house trainers.

E-courses

Modern tech allows us to stay flexible in how we plan training courses. You can choose from a variety of online courses available on our Smart Arena training portal – some courses are assigned to you based on your area of work, but you can apply for any course you find interesting. Amongst other, online courses are used to provide training in workplace safety and health and in fire safety.

Fostering a leadership mentality

Managers play an important role in motivating others and helping them grow, so our manager training at the in-house academy puts emphasis on encouraging teamwork and collaboration. The training courses comprise three different stages with various modules aimed to teach you the skills you will need to successfully lead others.

How do I apply?

To take part in a training course, you first need to have your training request approved by your immediate supervisor. Whether your request can be approved will depend, amongst other, on how much funding was earmarked for training in your particular department. If approved, a purchase order is created in SAP for your organisational unit, which has to be signed by the head of your department. Once the administrative procedure is completed, you can submit an application for the relevant training programme. You will receive a notice when your application has been accepted.

Out-of-house training programmes

IC has a long-standing tradition of training SŽ staff for rail-related jobs.

Under the relevant decision of the Public Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for Railway Transport (AŽP), the centre is certified to perform the tasks of the Train Driver Training Centre and Train Driver Assessment Centre.

IC delivers all training programmes required for operations staff who perform safety- critical tasks (OVKN) and programmes relating to workplace safety and health.

The centre is headquartered at Aljaževa ulica 32 in the city of Ljubljana (location of the former Rail Electrotechnical School, present-day Gimnazija Šiška high school).
