The railway sector continuously raises public awareness about safety at level crossings and within railway areas. Among other initiatives, we regularly take part in international campaigns and events, including the International Level Crossing Awareness Day and the International Trespass Awareness Day, both observed in June.
These campaigns are part of global initiatives led by the International Union of Railways (UIC), aimed at informing the wider public about the dangers associated with crossing railway tracks. They also promote cooperation between different sectors to reduce the number of accidents and improve safety. The campaigns are followed by the railway community worldwide, and Slovenian Railways proudly joins these efforts every year.
According to UIC estimates, there are more than half a million level crossings worldwide, with just over 20% of them located in the European Union. Almost one-third of all railway accidents in Europe and elsewhere involve level crossings, including those with fatal consequences. When trespassing and unauthorised presence on railway tracks are taken into account, these incidents represent over 90% of all railway-related accidents.
Many accidents are caused by users who deliberately take risks or make poor decisions due to inattention, routine behaviour, or lack of awareness. To improve safety at level crossings and throughout railway areas, the railway sector conducts risk assessments and introduces various technical solutions and innovations. In addition to safety measures, a number of educational programmes and awareness campaigns are carried out to further enhance safety. When necessary, preventive actions are also implemented to discourage unsafe behaviour.
In 2025, awareness campaigns focus on making the right choices, under the slogan “Safe Decisions – Every Time You Cross”, encouraging the public to consider the potentially irreversible consequences of unsafe decisions when crossing railway tracks. A few examples of reckless and risky behaviour can be seen in the two videos below.
